ā€œ Let's pack it up and roll out!
- A GDI Soldier in Albania
ā€

The MD-88 Power Projection Vehicle, colloquially known as the Rig, is a utility vehicle used by the Global Defense Initiative that appears in Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrath. It carries no defenses when packed up, has light armor and moves slowly, making it extremely susceptible damage. It cannot crush infantry.

History[]

One of the most unique power projection systems in the world, the Rig is a vehicle that is designed to roll deep into enemy territory and quickly deploy into a heavily armed Battle Base structure. With nearly triple the health and armed with Guardian cannons and a missile launcher, the deployed Battle Base is capable of engaging enemy vehicles and aircraft. As an added bonus, Rigs carry a complement of auto-drones for making field repairs to GDI vehicles.

The Rig/Battle Base Combination is ideal for claiming and holding terrain, enabling GDI field commanders to employ a classic "Clear and Hold" strategy for securing Tiberium fields or gradually taking over an objective area.[1]

Abilities[]

Call for transport
Call for transport
Deploy Orders the Rig to unpack into a Battle Base. This ability can only be activated on flat terrain with sufficient open ground for the Rig to set up (Ctrl+A).

In-game[]

The Rig has no defenses and has much less HP until deployed. Deployment is not instantaneous and takes several seconds. Once deployed, the so-called 'Battle Base' would hold down a position by providing repairs to assist friendly units and fending off minor patrols with its cannons, so it is advisable to choose a position around the enemy forces, but not right at the front line.

It is the same price as a war factory but half as durable, so consider building a forward base instead (relocating the MCV if necessary) if repairs and reinforcements are continually needed. Since the rig has no means of defense whilst mobile it is unlikely to fend off threats on its own; so friendly escort in-transit from vehicles or infantry would help its survivability and lend any necessary support during the relocation.

There are other cases where a rig may be useful: the Battle Base can also detect stealth units after being deployed, and can continue functioning even when a blackout occurs, as it has its own power supply. Also, its drones may also repair nearby aircraft if an airfield is unavailable.
