The Crane is a structure available for construction for both the GDI and Nod.

Background

Its primary function is supporting the construction yard in its duties by segregating and preparing prefabricates for building construction.

In-game

As such, each crane allows for construction of a building simultaneously with another crane or construction yard. Cranes are only built by MCVs, and cannot be built by other cranes.

GDI crane operators tend to get bored in their line of work and often "do the wave" with their crane's arm.

The Scrin had their own version of the crane, known as a Foundry.

It is worth noting that as of Tiberium Wars patch 1.07, Cranes are unable to construct base defenses. This can occasionally present problems in the campaign, i.e. in Nod's mission to take Washington DC where no Construction Yard is initially present.
